The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead

This book by Colson Whitehead will probably break your heart in eight different ways, but you simply must read it. The reader experiences the horrors of slavery through the eyes of Cora. She was born on a cotton plantation in Georgia, and her whole life is a study in tragedy. She manages to escape a cruel master, but that is just the beginning of her tale. Slavery narratives are never easy to read; this book definitely had some cringe-worthy moments. These types of books are beyond important, however, lest we forget the evils of our past. Mr. Whitehead chooses to create an actual railroad; hopefully folks will do their research and understand that that is a metaphor.

This book clocks in at #24 on my self-imposed Pulitzer Prize for fiction challenge, and #63/2017.
