Pretty Baby – Mary Kubica

I could not put this book down. This, reader friends, was a blessing; I am trying to hit my goal of reading 50 books this year. I had roughly three weeks of vacation (lucky girl) between November 1st and December 7th; needless to say, I didn’t get much reading done during that time. So, this story by Mary Kubica was perfectly timed as book number 47.

While riding on the L in Chicago, a kindhearted wife and mother named Heidi notices a young teenage girl holding a baby. Willow, the girl, stands in the pouring rain with her baby, Ruby. Heidi’s husband, Chris, used to be enamored with his wife’s need to save the world; now he would appreciate her spending some of that time and attention on him.

As the lives of Heidi and Chris Wood become enmeshed with Willow’s and Ruby’s, this reader was kept guessing throughout. Where did they come from? How did they end up living on the street? What effect will this newfound relationship have on the Woods’ marriage? Will it adversely affect their surly preteen daughter? Is one of these main characters mentally unstable and dangerous?

This book is a thriller for sure. Ms. Kubica expertly tells the tale from all three main characters’ viewpoints. The story was very well written, and each character jumped off of the pages. Sorry for the short review, but I need to get back to reading. Here’s hoping I can knock out 3 books in 12 days.
