Postcards – Annie Proulx

One of my all-time favorite books is The Shipping News by Annie Proulx. The writing in Postcards is just as brilliant; the story, however, left me wondering and with a bad taste in my mouth.

The tragic tale follows the Blood family from hard time to hard time. Loyal, the favorite son, becomes a drifter with a terrible secret that won’t allow him one minute of peace or happiness. Jewell and Mink are the parents; Jewell is one of the few likable characters in the book, and Mink is a first class POS. Dub is the one-armed son with a smile for miles and an itch to get away from the crappy family farm. Mernelle Blood, the lone daughter, is also looking for her escape.

The book is filled with horror story after debacle followed by misfortune. Some parts of it reminded me of The Grapes of Wrath, a classic that I loathed. The saving grace may be a character named ‘Toot Nipple.’ The Doc got endless entertainment out of that name. (He glanced over my shoulder at one point, saw that moniker, and said, “What are you reading?!”)

That book pic, though. Taken on our fifth wedding anniversary in Cancun.
