A Man Called Ove – Fredrik Backman

I absolutely loved this book by Fredrick Backman. The character Ove was so completely memorable. I can actually picture myself reading this one again someday.

Ove is a decidedly one of a kind character. On the surface, he is your typical grumpy old man. Every one around him, seemingly, is an idiot. Everyone except the love of his life, Sonja. For Ove, the sun rises and sets upon her lovely shoulders. Ove faces his share of hard times. The story picks up when a couple and their daughters move into his neighborhood.

Ove shares his past with us as he is making some tough choices about his present state. Through a multitude of layers, the seemingly angry man shows himself to have a huge heart. He is an avid rule follower, and cannot understand why everyone else can’t get on board with his way of thinking. In my opinion, we could use a few more Oves in the world.

I cried like a baby. Then, I asked my husband to watch the movie version (which was very well done), and I cried some more. This book will make you laugh, it will make you weep, and it will make you read the damn signs and do what they say.
