We Were Liars – E. Lockhart

Well…don’t believe anything you read. This is an aptly titled book by E. Lockhart, and I could not put it down.

The author expertly tells this modern day ‘fairy’ tale of the Sinclair family. From the outside, they are perfect. Smart, rich, and strong parents who begat three daughters. The daughters’ children are all beautiful blond offspring who spend each summer on an idyllic private island, adjacent to Martha’s Vineyard. The four oldest cousins are dubbed ‘The Liars’ by the eldest girl, Cadence. Cadence describes her cousins in the most amazing of ways; “Mirren is…Sugar. She is curiosity and rain. Johnny is bounce. He is effort and snark.” And then there is Gat…you need to read this book to find out about that guy.

One summer changes everything.

I was truly caught off-guard by the ending. Or maybe I am just lying to your face.
