Big Little Lies – Liane Moriarty

I have been seeing commercials for the upcoming miniseries on HBO starting in February. The cast looks solid (Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley) so I was a little curious. Enter a serendipitous moment at Barnes & Noble where I spy this title on the sale table, and I had my hot little reader hands on this book before the show comes out. I finished this book in one day; I could not put it down. This may be the silver lining of The Doc working 28-hour shifts this month…so much time to read! (This is book #7 for the year, if you are counting along with me.)

Liane Moriarty tells the tale of three moms (or “mums” as these gals are Australian) of Kindergarten students. Madeline is a firecracker; she is on the lookout for a good fight and is ten kinds of outspoken. Her daughter, Chloe, has been ready for school since birth. Celeste is the kind of pretty that stops folks in their footsteps; she is crazy rich and mother of twin boys, Max and Josh. Finally, single-mother Jane is new to town with her son Ziggy. This triad supports each other through triumphs, struggles, and…murder.

We have all heard (and seen) the dangers of helicopter parenting. These ladies take it to a whole new level. The dialogue is smart, the characters are well defined, and the story is quick-paced and relatable, yet with surprises at every turn. I can’t wait to watch the show, and I will be eagle-eying the shelves at B&N for another title by this author.
