The Virgin Blue – Tracy Chevalier

Author Tracy Chevalier always hooks me with her books. She is the author of one of my all time favorites, Girl With a Pearl Earring, so I always get a little excited when I get my reading hands on one of her books. This is a dual story; one half focusing on Isabelle and the other half honing in on Ella. Isabelle is a likeable, sad character living a decidedly tragic life in France in the 1500s. Ella is a modern day wife and midwife. She is an American whose husband gets a job in France. Ella decides to whine around a bit, then delve into her family’s history. The ladies’ stories entertwine in a fully satisfying way. Ella is a little tough to take. Perhaps it is because I am a newlywed, I had a hard time with her unfaithfulness. Maybe if the author had upped the douche factor of the husband, it would have been more easy to understand. Overall, a very enjoyable read.
