The Aztec-The Main Bar Sandwich Shop

A recent Saturday morning found the husband and me kayaking around downtown St. Petersburg. If you have a valid USF student ID, you can kayak for free. What an amazing view, and what a spectacular way to see our city from a different perspective. We watched planes take off from Albert Whitted (one directly over us!), saw the new Dali museum from the water, and took in what remains of The Pier.

After our adventure, we were starving. We headed over the Sunshine Skyway to The Main Bar Sandwich Shop in Sarasota. We had actually been trying to reach this restaurant for the past few years; we always seemed to hit it on a Sunday or a holiday. (The hours are Monday-Saturday, 10-4.)
The Main Bar is a Sarasota classic. Opened in 1958 by retiring circus performers, this place boasts all of the big top paraphernalia and over 50 sandwiches.

For an appetizer, we went with an order of Dolmas (marinated grape leaves stuffed with seasoned rice.) We asked for the cold version, and were berated when we requested forks and knives. Apparently, you must go hands-only at The Main Bar, our  waitress informed us. In a good natured manner, of course.

The Husband chose The Aztec.  Roast beef, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a killer jalapeno dressing all on top of an amazingly fresh Kaiser roll. That dressing will haunt my dreams. It was the perfect spicy sandwich glue. We both voted this bad boy as our favorite of the day, and the reason we will return to The Main Bar.

The Lido sandwich was a perfectly good combination of turkey, Swiss, tomato, cucumber, 1000 Island, and slaw on pumpernickel. I love cucumber on a sandwich. Next time I would get a little extra dressing and slaw, but that is just me.

If you are ever in the Sarasota area, make sure you stop by The Main Bar. I am definitely heading back for that Aztec. And the Balkan. And the Pheasant’s Pheasant. And the Prairie. And…….
