The Surgeon – Tess Gerritsen

Since moving to Atlanta, one of my very favorite things to do is attend the AJC Decatur Book Festival. For a book nerd, this festival is just about as good as gets. Hundreds of authors, a giant crossword puzzle, and local beers all smack in the middle of Decatur Square. If you have not been to any of the restaurants in this area, go now with a quickness, as it is a foodie’s dream land.

This year, the husband and I happened upon an author talk featuring J.T. Ellison & Tess Gerritsen. I had read one novel by the former (a Book of the Month Club selection) and had only heard of the latter. These two ladies were phenomenal. I had been struggling with my writing; I left the Q & A feeling inspired, determined, and buzzing with warm bookish type feelings. Tess Gerritsen is a doctor; my ears perked right up when she spoke of her time as a doc. She actually began writing her first book while on maternity leave.

The Surgeon is the beginning of the Rizzoli and Isles series of books. I have never seen the show on TV, but I have heard good things about it. After reading this novel, all I know for sure is that the Rizzoli in the books is no where near as hot as Angie Harmon. The Surgeon is the moniker given to a serial killer who preys on women. This sicko has a skilled hand, medical knowledge, and a sick passion for focusing in on women who have already been victimized. Detectives Moore and Rizzoli are on the case. Moore is easy to like, smart, and sympathetic. Rizzoli has a chip on her shoulder a mile wide and a knack for seeing things that others do not. The story is disturbing on myriad levels, and it will make all of your lady parts cringe in the bad way.

This is a fast-paced and disturbing case. I love a good detective series and I will probably read a few more of these books.

Do you have any special memories of authors speaking live?

When I met her, I babbled about The Doc finishing residency. Like a spaz.
