Since We Fell – Dennis Lehane

This is the first time I have read anything by Dennis Lehane. I had seen a few of the movies based on his books (Mystic River, most memorably) so I figured that I was in for some violence, but I wasn’t sure what to expect. I know that I didn’t expect to love it, but I did. That is the wonderful thing about books; one can still be happily surprised when having moderate expectations.

Rachel is raised by a single mother, who happens to be a shrink and chock full of the secrets. Rachel’s skewed view of the world prompts her to marry poorly, become a journalist, and search for her father. Those three things are just the tip of the iceberg. This story had so many twists and turns I was surprised that the book didn’t just jump out of my hands at one point. There is tension, there is violence, there are psychological issues, and above all, shockingly, there is romance.

Another great pick for me from the Book of the Month Club.
