Roast Beef Po Boy – Cajun Cafe on the Bayou

If you are wondering how I ended up in Louisiana on Sunday, please follow closely my “Tale of Nikki’s First and thus far Greatest Po Boy Experience”.  For this football season, I decided that a fun way for my boyfriend and I to learn to cook together was to make a dish for every football Sunday. Living in Tampa Bay, we are both Bucs fans. The agreement was to come up with meals from the opposing team’s city. It has been a joy, and a fun way to learn some mad cooking skills and eat some delicious cuisine from across this great nation. On Sunday the 16th, the Bucs faced division rivals New Orleans. I studied recipes all week, as Cajun deliciousness is in abundance. Fast forward to Sunday: after a week of too much of that real life stuff getting in the way, we were tired and just plain lazy. Through a Google search in the wee Sunday morning hours, my sweetheart happened upon Cajun Cafe on the Bayou in Pinellas Park, Florida. We turned the corner and were suddenly….in the swamp.

The extremely rustic restaurant sits on a river. Signs everywhere ordered you to “Turn your cell phone off!” As it was a perfect fall day, we sat outside and ordered Abita root beer….”Made with pure Louisiana sugar cane!” Hands down second only to the king of all sodas….Dr. Pepper. I had been studying Po Boy recipes all week, so that was an easy order. The Roast Beef sandy came on a to- die-for French roll (from Cafe Croissant), lemon mayo, shredded lettuce, fried onions, the most flavorful roast beef I have ever had, and GRAVY folks. I almost didn’t share. If you are any type of food fan, you must go to this place with a quickness. Also, it is very good luck, as the Bucs downed the Saints, 26-20.

  1. You forgot to mention your third favorite soda…Vernor’s Ginger Ale, straight from Detroit!

  2. Oh….that is definitely Spencer’s new favorite!!! Maybe next season we go with a sandwich/soda exclusive menu!!

  3. Also…thanks to a geography lesson (the restaurant is located on Cross Bayou) and a suggestion to try this sandy the traditional way with Savoy cabbage per the restaurant owners. You guys rock.
