Why Not Me? – Mindy Kaling

11

Hooray for February! January was a whirlwind of books for me. The Doc had to work 28-hour shifts all month in the ICU (residency continues to be super easy) which left me loads of time to catch up on my reading. I read eleven books in January, which seems to bode well for a strong year on the reading front. Much like pipers piping and that cool gal from Stranger Things, I am feeling good about the world of books.

This collection is ten kinds (or 11) of perfect for an afternoon at the pool or beach. Mindy Kaling offers her version of the comedic book filled with personal essays. The book is chock-full of quick, relatable stories and many entertaining photographs. I remember enjoying her work on The Office (as I enjoyed everything about that show) and I have seen her in movies from time to time, but I didn’t really know much about her. Here is what I learned: she is smart, sassy, unapologetic, fashionable, and funny. I love how she stands up to weight-obsessed Hollywood. A plague should fall upon any reporter who body shames. “If I were your doctor or your congresswoman or your sandwich artist, you wouldn’t be shocked to see me, and yet, because I’m an actress, a grown man was amazed that I put jam on my toast.” She’s gorgeous, BTW. It is a ridiculous world that we live in. At the end of the day, we all want to look our best; sometimes, that just doesn’t match up with others’ expectations.

That being said…I loved Ms. Kaling’s honest beauty tips. I shall be stealing a few of those, and will probably be eternally grateful.

Have you read this book? What are your reading goals for 2017?

Excuse me now, I must go and binge watch 100 episodes of The Mindy Project on Hulu.
