The Nightingale – Kristin Hannah

This novel by Kristin Hannah is about two sisters during WWII. The sisters, born in a small village in France, have very different personalities. They lose their mother at an early age, and their father abandons them. Vianne finds solace in the arms of Antoine and her daughter Sophie. Isabelle is kicked out of one school after another, due to her inability to keep quiet and act like a lady. The war comes. Antoine is drafted, and Vianne is forced to house German soldiers and fend for herself. Isabelle becomes a key player in the Resistance.

This book tells the tale of women in war. Their stories have often gone untold. Women face decidedly unique problems while trying to keep those home fires burning. Some women even became heroes; they were often not suspected of ‘treason’, especially if they were young and beautiful, like Isabelle. The resilience of these two ladies is Herculean. It is a book about a terrible war, so of course it will break your heart in a hundred different ways. These kinds of stories are so important; we must never forget the horrors of WWII and the persecution of millions.
