And the Mountains Echoed – Khaled Hosseini

Khaled Hosseini is one of those rare authors that speaks to my soul. While reading this story by the author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, I vacillated between not wanting the book to end and wanting to race to the finish.

Mr. Hosseini expertly and achingly tells the tale of a brother and sister born in Afghanistan. Their heartbreaking story of separation is at the center of this saga. What is completely amazing is that the author, in the most complex and beautiful way, masterfully constructs the stories of those touched by this main event. Each character the reader is introduced to offers a fresh glimpse into the human condition. These vignettes offer great insight into the myriad emotions and events that comprise familial relationships. Sometimes it was like reading a great collection of short stories, connected by a common thread.

Reading And the Mountains Echoed also gave me a small education into the culture of Afghanistan. I am not big on reading non-fiction/history type books, so this is the best possible way for someone like me to learn about other lands.

According to one key player, “I suspect that we are waiting, all of us, against insurmountable odds, for something extraordinary to happen to us.”  My extraordinary event? Well, that happened on a December day in 2010. That day that I first laid eyes on my husband. While reading this book, that sweetheart would notice tears streaming down my face and bring me some tissues and a hug.
Put this book at the top of your reading list, and take a moment to enjoy all of the blessings in your life today.
