Hemptation

Some days, the Blogger stars align. You become a lucky gal who gets invited to one of your favorite restaurants (right by your house, no less) to taste some new and innovative menu items. What eatery, you ask? Tijuana Flats. I am such a big fan of that place, I actually ate there on Saturday, knowing full well I was going to the tasting event a mere two days later. I was excited, intrigued, and rubbing my hands together in an embarrassingly overzealous fashion. Tijuana Flats, as usual, surprised and did not disappoint with the royal treatment.  We ordered drinks from the friendliest staff ever, and waited for the first item to arrive.

All Mexican-type meals should start off with a kick.  The Atom Bomb is cheesy, peppery perfection. Lightly fried tortillas, cream cheese, fresh jalapenos, Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally sauce, and sour cream which is completely necessary to cool this bad boy off a little bit.

The three new burritos are made with hemp seed tortillas high in protein and Omega-3. In all honesty, the casing did not taste vastly different from their regular business. What is special here is what they shoved into those tortillas. Behold: The Pie Roller. This dream come true is a pizza burrito with pepperoni and red sauce, mozzarella cheese, fajita peppers, onions, and mushrooms. It is then toasted with red sauce, pepperoni and cheese. Pizza lovers and folks with munchies, you may start your celebration now. Up next was the Tree Hugger, a new vegetarian option. Roasted poblanos, mushrooms, onions, cilantro, scallions, cream cheese, tortilla chips, cheese, and queso. This was the kind of burrito that got progressively better with each fantastic bite.  Food loving friends, they saved the best for last. I feel like the fine folks at Tijuana Flats came up with this one just for me!! A hemp tortilla filled with crispy chicken and churros, cinnamon sugar, maple syrup, queso, cheese, bacon and onions. I was stuffed to the gills at this point…and I ate my whole portion. It was exactly the right blend of salty and sweet, and all of the different textures worked together in blissful harmony. No meal is complete without a sweet treat to finish it off. The Banana Empanadas were a lovely end to a wonderful evening.

Don’t forget to dip into the caramel sauce!

I know my husband is all about getting his hands on the Pie Roller, and I think you all know I need that Sweet Hemptation in my life more than once. My favorite quote of the night, during the introduction: “Something will offend you, but it won’t be the food.” That sums up Tijuana Flats flawlessly.   1. Yum! I was so excited to attend this, but my plus one who is super preggo went into labor that day! Of course that is exciting, but I wish I could have gone and hung with you all and ate glorious glorious food. Your review was awesome!

  2. I wanted to come solely for that veggie burrito, but I was too lazy to make the drive. It’s a good thing I’m at Tijuana Flats about once a week so I can order it soon.
