Dead Letters – Caite Dolan-Leach

I liked the idea of this book (another Book of the Month Club selection) more than the actual book.

Please allow me to explain.

Ava rushes home from grad school in Paris to upstate New York because her twin, Zelda, has been burned alive in the family barn, located on their winery. After being home a short time, Ava receives an email from Zelda. So, is her sister really dead? Is this a game? The clues are many and varied, and Caite Dolan-Leach keeps the mystery moving at a decent pace. I wanted to fully embrace this dead sister scavenger hunt; I became mired down in the intricacies of this completely awful family filled to the brim with booze hounds. I just kept thinking, go ahead and dip on back to Paris, Ava, your family is horrible.

But, of course, she does not. This is a great first novel; I am betting Ms. Dolan-Leach hits her stride with book number two.
