After a recent trek to Atlanta for a super fun weekend, we were driving back to the Tampa Bay area and searching for sandwiches. By the time we hit Gainesville, I was running solely on Sugar-Free Red Bull and chocolate licorice. My friend Alicia (a proud Florida Gator) had sent me some pretty amazing sounding restaurant choices. Sadly, this was a Monday. Gainesville is decidedly a college town; one of the restaurants was closed every Monday, one was closed for the holidays, and the other one closed at 4:00. After 4:00 and fueled by road trip snacks, you get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit. Enter Bonos BBQ.
This down home place boasts a huge barbecue pit, Southern cooking, and fast and friendly service. We quickly ordered an appetizer that turned out to be our favorite item of the day. It was hog heaven!!
My Life-Long Chauffeur Spencer ordered the BBQ Po-Boy with some delicious Macaroni and Cheese.
I opted for the Bird Dog: Smoked Turkey topped with a Smoked Sausage Link. I loved that there were a plethora of sauces at the table to sample. My side? Fried corn on the cob, which I had never bitten into in my life. It was odd! So buttery, so greasy, so wrong, and yet so right.
