Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng

I am slowly but surely falling in love with all versions of the fresh and filling sandwich known as the Bánh mì. The Bánh mì is a French Baguette filled with Vietnamese goodness. I was happy to see a new small business open up in my neck of the woods that offers these yummies. Alyssa’s Cafe (according to the sign; on the menu it is christened “Alyssa Cafe”) is located at 8424 4th Street North in St. Petersburg.
The space is super small (great for take out!) and the people working there are very friendly. Interestingly, the menu also offers American sandwiches. On this day, the Husband and I stuck to the Vietnamese side of things.  We started with Spring Rolls (rice paper with shrimp, pork, rice vermicelli, and and one of my all time favorite dipping sauces: hoisin peanut!)

The sweet lady behind the counter also brought us an Egg Roll to sample.

Spencer ordered the Bánh mì đặc biệt: Pate, ham jambon, pickled carrot, cucumber, and cilantro.

The best item of the day was the Bánh mì thịt nướng. It was just perfect. BBQ pork, pate, butter, pickled carrots, cilantro, and jalapenos. The combination of savory meats, refreshing veggies, and that little snap of spice on a crunchy baguette hit the spot.

We topped everything off with a little Bun Bi: shredded pork, carrots, and peanuts on vermicelli.

This Cafe is extremely reasonable (we dipped out of there for under $20). Now, I have to go back and try their Hoagies. 🙂
