The Alienist – Caleb Carr

Forensic science was basically nonexistent in 1896. Caleb Carr creates characters that use their wits and rudimentary tools to create a criminal profile, which was an idea that was unheard of at the time. The two main characters are Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, an alienist, and John Moore, a reporter. What is an alienist, you may be asking yourself, as did I. An alienist is an old-school term for a psychologist, a profession that was often ridiculed and questioned.

New York City has been rife with some entirely graphic crimes against children. Kreizler and Moore, with the help of Theodore Roosevelt (the book is peppered with some great historically fictional aspects) assemble a team to try and catch the monster who is harming the city’s youth. The team assembled is crime-fighting perfection. Sara Howard is a woman for all women to cheer for, the detective brothers smart and funny, and the various souls saved by Kreizler round out all of the edges.

The why becomes just as important as the who.

I am ten kinds of excited about the series coming to TNT this January. Daniel Brühl is always amazing and seems to be perfectly cast as Laszlo. I am a little worried about the graphic nature being depicted; I may have to go full on eye-cover and have The Doc tell me what is going on. Also, it was super hard to not tell him all about this book, but I want him to fully enjoy the series sans spoilers.

On a less grisly note…this was 99/2017!! Hurray!!
