13 Reasons Why – Jay Asher

I really like Jay Asher‘s writing style in this story about the very serious topic of teenage suicide (don’t do it! I just recently watched Heathers for the umpteenth time, sorry). He continually flips from past to present and between two characters almost seamlessly.

Young Hannah has decided to end her life. She traces the people and events that led her to this decision. She dedicates a side of one cassette tape to each major player, explaining herself. We ‘listen’ to the tapes via Clay, a sweet boy who had a major crush on Hannah.

Some of the issues Hannah faced were small, some were criminal. I remember feeling overwhelmed in high school; there is so much going on, inside and outside of one’s body, and everything is magnified. I knew way too many young people who made this decision; the damage suicide leaves behind is immeasurable. Life gets better! Just hang on, there’s a big, beautiful world out there.

The Doc and I are watching the Netflix series, it seems solid so far. I hope there is just one season.
